Weekly Update 9/4

Good afternoon families! One week is already done! This week we are excited to welcome Kindergarten students. There is no school tomorrow, Monday, September 4th. We will see everyone on Tuesday!

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures
Procedures can be found here:

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures 2023-2024

Please always have an ID with you when picking up your child and communicate any changes in dismissal plans to the office. Be sure to call in if your child will be out sick or late.

Kindergarten families:
On Tuesday, we will gather all KINDERGARTEN students on the back playground area on Hancock St. before heading into the building as a class. Families may park in the parking lot or on SIDE STREETS off Hancock St. Please do not park in the front pick up line or directly on Hancock St.

Attendance
As we all know, attendance greatly impacts achievement. Tilton Elementary School will have an increased focus on attendance this year. We want you to be partners with us in this endeavor. Our plan in achieving/working towards this goal includes greater engagement between our teachers and families. Please anticipate a call from your child’s teacher if your child has been out three or more consecutive days and we have not heard from you. Please find 10 facts about attendance here. We are here to support all of our families. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us.

Please find some tips below to ensure you and your children are ready to go:

• Start talking to your child in a positive manner about school. Whether they are in Kindergarten or 12th grade each school year brings excitement but also brings anxieties. Allow your children to talk about their feelings without judgement. All feelings are valid and the more your child can share their thoughts with you, the better equipped they are to face any challenge that may come their way. Not sure how here’s some tips https://childmind.org/article/help-children-manage-fears/

• Don’t wait for school to start to get your child back on a sleep schedule. Waking up late or not getting enough sleep can add unneeded stress to those first few days of school. Create a bedtime routine now, that includes turning off all electronic devices at least an hour before they go to sleep. https://www.thensf.org/back-to-school-sleep-tips/

• Plan for the unexpected. Start arranging for backup rides in case you have car trouble, or your child misses the bus. Reach out to friends and family that you can count on to get your child off the bus or pick them up sick from school if you are unable to.

• Practice the expected. No matter how your student gets back and forth to school, start practicing now. Walk or bicycle with them to school, to the bus stop or drive over to school. Look into forming carpools or walking buddies for the school year. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/safety-prevention/on-the-go/Pages/safety-on-the-way-to-school.aspx

• Schedule your child’s Doctor, Dentist, and other appointments now so that you can get times that have minimal impact on their school day. Good physical and mental health is essential to being in school and effectively learning. Here is some great information from the American Academy of Pediatrics about your child’s well-being and school attendance. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/gradeschool/school/Pages/School-Attendance-Truancy-Chronic-Absenteeism.aspx
